When I served in the military I had the opportunity to try our version of the FAL. It was not the standard issue rifle anymore (The Steyr AUG is), but I could try it anyway. Lovely beast, heavy, everything made of quality ordnance grade steel, dead reliable, super easy to to take apart, every part completely overbuilt, shoots a 7.62x51 with very little recoil. It felt like a real mans life compared to all the plastic fantastics chambered in the mini 5.56 round. If I could own only one rifle I'd own the heavy barrel LMG version of it, unfortunately the village elders...errm politicians decided I cant have one.

You can't use FAL parts and magazines on SLR's and vice versa. SLR's used to be the Australian service rifle before they phased them out and replaced them with a the F88 Austeyr, an AUG variant in the 90s. When this happened a lot of them went 'missing' because the officials didn't give a shit about a few missing obsolete rifles.

The 5.56 simply lacks the punch for that. The 7.62 is a nice multi purpose cartridge with lots of power and range.

It can be found universally, its excellent against soft targets, little to no recoil, and...you can get armor piercing varients like the K9 Flechette series or even incendiary rounds for the cartridge. It's a good all around performer

The only downside is the cartridge is a little heavier to carry and the recoil is a bit heaver but neither things are even close to excessive. I'd go with the 7.62 because there is no reason to go with the 5.56.

In my time with the military I ran into AK after AK and time and again, they failed the people using them by not offering accuracy but power. It doesn't matter how lethal your shit is if its missing me forty feet away.

If we're talking about cover fire, thats the job of an LMG anyway. The first rifle I ever fired was a K98k in 8x57is, puts some serious lead downrange.

Even after the city fell in 2003 there were skirmishes across it for weeks, company sized forces are less then apt for dealing with rogue military personnel so a lot of positions were attacked, bombed or just shelled out by a handful of people. So that led to my experience with AK's and their inability to hit someone from roughly forty feet away. And sure I missed a few times getting him lined up but when I did hit him, that 7.62 didn't help much. The 5.56 does its job.

Sorry but if you can't hit someone from 40 motherfucking feet away with no matter what kind of gun you are a terrible shot. At 40 feet you have to to hit unless the bullets are coming out sideways, heck, a shotgun with 00 buckshot has twice that range and can hit human sized silhouettes at 80 no problem.
