So... I've been laying off the sauce for a while. Time to review a couple stouts! I think I've earned it. Please indulge me as I pretend to be a beer connoisseur. First up is the Young's Double Chocolate stout I had a few nights ago, posted in another thread. (check the "behind the monitor thread") It was good, but despite the name, a bit one dimensional in my humble opinion. I like the nose, and the bittersweet finish. However it left something to be desired. Might be too much malted barley? Kind of overrated. Next is the first of tonight's beers: Sierra Nevada Narwhal stout. Very malty nose. First sip is extremely bitter. Next mouthful is sweeter, with a boozy heat & roasty notes. This one's a bit more "chewy" than most stouts, a very full-bodied stout. Not overpowering, but maybe a little much for some palates. Perhaps a bit heavy, but might pair well with raw oysters or a milk chocolate custard. The final one for tonight is Belhaven's Black Scottish stout. Wow! Very similar to Guinness draught, even using a nitrogen widget. The nose is a bit more herbal & earthy than Guinness, and the first sip is slightly sweeter and a little tangy. The finish has a bit of funky "barnyard", a hay or buckwheat flavor. It is so subtle that I can't say it is a strike against this beer's overall flavor profile. Very unique while simultaneously being a true European stout. Delicious.
