Okay, finished watching it. Overall, it's an entertaining, if flawed, watch. There are pacing issues, not enough or good world-building, and possibly worse holes (than the ones I pointed before) insofar the writing is concerned, but we'll need to wait at least another season to confirm that. I've already complained about how erratically they handled the villain (Lord Viren), King Harrow, and the backstory, so let's move on. Our main trio of characters (Callum, Ezran, and Rayla) is likable enough, if perhaps a tad reminiscent of similar series. Such is the case of Callum, who's similar to Sokka in terms of his humour and mind for tactics. Fortunately, he's less of a goof, as that role is left for the son of Lord Viren, Soren, sort of a good-hearted dumb jock. His sister, Claudia, is a lot more interesting, with her quirky personality, affinity for the dark arts (again, apparently the only magic humans wield), and maybe a soft spot for Prince Callum? It's nice that Viren's kids aren't villainous by extension, and hopefully they'll join our trio in their quest in the second season. General Amaya's introduction, Callum and Ezran's badass aunt, took me by surprise as I was not expecting her to be deaf. Maybe this is a bid for representation, but I liked her all the same and, hey, Toph was blind! It's a pity that a couple of scenes went by me as they did not include a transcript of what she was saying. On the other hand, Commander Gren, her translator and second-in-command, seemed thoroughly unsuitable both for his rank and the task that's assigned to him, though he did have a couple of funny scenes.
Ultimately, Season 1, if we can call it such, is incredibly short, just 9 episodes in total, and ends in a sort of mid-season finale. I've read some reviews argue this is barely enough time to get us to know or relate to the characters. While I agree to some extent, Korra's first season was only 12 episodes long and it's storytelling was a lot tighter than The Dragon Prince's and handled its large cast of characters much better (not to mention its world-building was leagues better). In short, it can be a fun series if you just roll with it, but you may have to push past the first 2 or 3 episodes for that to happen. In any event, it has ways to go if it hopes to capture the magic of ATLA or even Korra.
