www.ncsl.org/research/civil-and-criminal-justice/summary-president-obama-gun-proposals.aspx"Requires background checks for all gun sales and strengthens the background check system. This would include removing barriers under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act so that states may more freely share information about mental health issues involving potential gun purchasers. Gimmie dat national FOID, dog. Provides states with monetary incentives—$20 million in fiscal year FY 2013 and a proposed $50 million in FY 2014—to share information so that records on criminal history and people prohibited from gun ownership due to mental health reasons are more available. Gimmie dat national FOID, dog.Bans military-style assault weapons and limits magazines to a capacity of 10 rounds. Columbine(1994 Assault Weapons Ban in effect at time of shooting.) and Virginia Tech prove that makes little difference when dealing with an unopposed shooter. 'Feel good' legislation at its best.Provides additional tools to law enforcement. The plan proposes a crackdown on gun trafficking by asking Congress to pass legislation that closes “loopholes” in gun trafficking laws and establishes strict penalties for “straw purchasers” who pass a background check and then pass guns on to prohibited people. Yo, fuck straw purchasers. "Loophole" = 100% legal person to person transfer, which I am not opposed to.-----> (Gimme dat national FOID, dog)Urges Congress to pass the administration’s $4 billion proposal to keep 15,000 state and local police officers on the street to help deter gun crime. It's odd they focus solely on gun crime, but yes. I'd be down with a higher police presence and shorter response times.Maximizes efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime. The president calls upon the attorney general to work with U.S. attorneys across the country to determine gaps occurring in this area and where supplemental resources are appropriate. Assuming 'preventing gun violence' is not simply passing gun control laws, yes, that's great. Knowing our president and AG... it's passing more gun control laws. Nope!Provides training for “active shooter” situations to 14,000 law enforcement, first responders and school officials. Yes, god, yes. No brainer. And I'm not saying arm all teachers, that's goofy. But, I think those who are qualified to carry(concealed, obviously) legally should be allowed to do so. Require additional training for said teachers.Directs the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services to issue a statement to health care providers that they are not prohibited by federal law from reporting threats of violence to the proper authorities. I take all threats of violence seriously, as should everyone else. However, I don't need doc asking about my possessions. That is a private matter.Launches a national gun safety campaign to encourage responsible gun ownership and authorizes the Consumer Product Safety Commission to examine issues relating to gun safety locks. The NRA offers excellent safety and training programs, no matter how much the media shits on them, there's no denying that fact. I keep my guns locked up, but I shouldn't have to do that with one I use for defensive purposes. I beliveve California has a law requiring trigger locks. I'd rather not be bludgeoned to death while fiddling with a trigger lock. Mandatory safe storage laws, European style, lead to privacy invasions. However, higher penalties for people who allow their guns to fall into the wrong hands due to negligence, I fully support. Helps schools invest in safety. The president’s plan calls for more school resource officers and counselors in all schools through the Community Oriented Policing Services hiring program. The plan also calls for the federal government to assist schools in developing emergency management plans. Yes.Improves mental health awareness through enhanced teacher training and referrals for treatment. The plan calls for the training of 5,000 additional mental health professionals nationwide. The plan also calls for coverage of mental health treatment under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008." Yaaaaassss ^I really don't see a problem with much of that at all^ Without responding to each of your posts, I'll just say that your fellow conservatives do. They have so much problem with it, they foamed at the mouth, dug their heels in at Congress and prevented all of that from being passed in legislation. Every bit of it. All the while, saying Obama was coming for everyone's guns, saying he was an anti-gun left wing liberal who the founding fathers would have drug out behind the shed and shot themselves. Because this isn't the Executive Orders Obama is going to enact. Well... it is, but it was originally legislation the administration proposed on January 16th, 2013. And was killed in Congress by countless filibusters by the Do Nothing Congress. It's only after nothing being done with it for close to three years and a huge spike in gun violence that Obama is going to do primarily the same things by Executive Order rather than through direct legislation. Conservatives thought this was all liberal left wing insanity. It's surprising to me that gun supporters here seem to think it is either pretty decent or, at its worst, merely ineffective.
