Calling it the gunshow loophole is kind of silly, since at least 90% of people selling guns at gunshows are licensed dealers. Any time you buy from a FFL holder, you have to fill out a ATF 4473 form, just as you would at a shop, and wait a set amount of time. The waiting period of course, varies by state, as there is no federal waiting period. Illinois is 24 hours for long guns, and 72 hours for handguns, even in a private sale. In Illinois, we have something known as a Firearm Owner Identification Card, or FOID, which is required to legally purchase arms and ammunition. You send in a paper app, or when the website is working, fill one out there. Assuming you have no criminal record, or haven't been diagnosed with any mental disabilities, they mail you one within 30 days. Now you've got a little ID card you hand to dealers/private sellers that basically says "Yo dog, I'm not a nut, and the po-leece said I'm good to buy guns." and you can use the website to make sure it's valid. It's convenient for private sellers, 'cause if the buyer does turn out to be a flake, you can be like "Yo cops, ya'll said he was good." We are one of the only states to require such a thing, however, and things are much different elsewhere. I helped a good friend of mine move from down south, and just before we left, we met some dude in a Wal-Mart parking lot. He gave random guy a .22 rifle, and random guy gave him $150. There was a handshake, and that was that. People want more background checks and shit, so why not FOID cards nationwide? They're kind of a pain in the ass, and I know most other states will fight them tooth and nail, but fuck, man. They really aren't so bad, if you ask me. Background check in your pocket, you know? Talk about convenience. I would widely applaud this. This FOID system sounds like removes lots of the headaches dealers face while being responsible. Of course, is there is no way in hell it would ever be passed. Mainly because Republicans would shut it down so hard it would make your head spin. "Why should the government be keeping lists of people who own guns?!" FoxNews would blast this out of the water before it had a minute to breathe.
