Contains possibly the most bizarre time skip that could ever exist, but is luckily notable for more than just that. The Horus Heresy books have tended to be pretty good, this one I read because of Aaron Dembski Bowden's absolutely magnificent work on his Night Lords trilogy. How do you humanise, care about and possibly even relate to characters from a faction of literal devil worshipping, daemon possessed monsters? I'd say its maybe easier in a mythos filled with different shades of monster, but Bowden's the only one I've seen pull it off well. This is more a transition of sorts to a faction becoming 'monstrous', or whatever the word means in the grim darkness of the far future, and the death spiral that initiates for the Imperium of Man. While no where near as good as Night Lords, I'm enjoying it immensely.

Heck just returning to 40k and reading in general is great. Its been a while for both. 

Past months, I've been reading:
The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins. Really enjoyed it. It's about a bunch of kids who are violently groomed by a God so they can be Gods as well. It obviously all goes wrong.
It was funny and brutal and bittersweet in a good way.

I've read like 70% of Jonathan Strange and Mr Nowel. Could not finish it. It's really well written and agreable to read but it's so sloooow. It's about two wizards and some fairies shenanigans, but mostly it's about mundane english high society stuff.

Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman. It's really short and nice. It's some kind of fairy tales mixed with norse mythology.

Krampus by Brom. It was fairly good. Not great but good.
There's some norse mythology in it as well. It's about Krampus, an old pagan devil like creature who was the patron of Yuletide (pagan Xmas) and who wants to take revenge on Santa Claus. A great deal of the novel is also about Steve, some looser who got himself into some trouble with the local dealers and get involved with Krampus by accident.

Reading I, Strahd in preparations of running a Curse of Strahd campaign in the near future.

Wow, I did not expect this first volume to be as gripping as it was! Slow build-up, engaging characters and dialogue, setting up a few mysteries for Gesicht to solve... Quite simply a great beginning all around and I'm already sold on reading the next volumes.

Having read the book now, I must give Kyle MacLachlan even more credit for his incredible portrayal of Paul's transformation from an Atreides, through Muad'Dib, to the Kwisatz Haderach. The books fills in a lot of the gaps from the latter half of the movie and is, to my mind, more grim in its portrayal of how a legend is born, one that could fuel a dangerous crusade across the stars. In hindsight, the movie was surprisingly faithful but it could've used another half-hour (the 3-hour long version) to flesh out the transformation from Muad'Dib to Kwisatz Haderach, as well as some of the surrounding events. The Weirding Way seems to have been the most radical departure between the book and the movie, but it was a reasonable compromise.

In short, a great read from beginning to end, and so self-contained I don't feel the need to read the rest of the books to be honest. I may at some point though.
