'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Criticized in China for Insulting IQ of the Audience

Curiously, that article really doesn't focus on the "insulting IQ" bit. It does however, mention that the Chinese market tends to favour an attractive cast and films grounded in reality. On the other hand, I found this other article from Sixth Tone that elaborates a bit on why the film may insult viewers' intelligence:

I have to admit he's got a point about the "incompetent Galactic Empire," something I'd already spotted with the Star Wars Rebels series.

Also, according to a report from Forbes, theaters in China have decided to pull 92% of the film's screenings, dropping to 2.6% from a 34.5% share.

Doesn't really matter when the people they're fighting are also incompetent. X)

Incompetency is like a main theme of TLJ or something.

I myself prefer the twist that Rey's parents were nobodies. You don't have to be related to someone special in the story to be a part of it and it echoed well with the story of leaving the past behind and going forward.

Plus having the movie destroy all those theories people went crazy about on Rey's parents was hilarious!

Didn't even mention that you watched it with me.

Yeah, got a few pet peeves with TLJ but Rey's parent's is not one of them.

And more to the point I don't get the argument of people saying her heritage was built up to be something big then nothing comes of it.

Nothing coming of it would have been it never being addressed.

Even the arc of her search for her parents is a decent message for the films. She goes into that ol' seaweed hole, supposedly lured by the dark with the promise of answers, and what it ultimately gives her, is nothing. Apt metaphor for the dark side amongst our main characters there.

No, the reveal that she's a nobody is the payoff and I think that absolutely is something. It was still a reveal, it played into Kylo trying to manipulate her and shook Rey up whilst trying to redeem him. Narratively its important and its also vitally important to me personally with how its contrary to typical Star Wars plot points and its 'small universe' approach, not to mention freeing for Rey to actually play to her own character.

There's appeal in her maybe having been another Skywalker I suppose but it would have been oh so predictable, and the only enjoyment or narrative purpose there really would have been seeing how that came about. (Mara Jade?)

Her being the kid of someone important would have entirely gone against what they were going for with the film and tearing down old legacies for something new. I dunno if they really needed to do it instead of just going into that something new (a bit of having your cake and eating going on with how much they seem to want a send off for the old without really committing all that much time to it either, but heyho).

But they did do that. And in that setting Rey being Rey from Nowhere is the best outcome.

That is until I start my fan theory that Rey was being literal when she said she was from Nowhere and its hinting at a Guardians of the Galaxy/Star wars crossover X)

I suppose it comes down to what you're expecting from the movie. Personally, I feel its worse but many people liked it and critics are raving about it. Here's my non-spoiler review from page 11 of this thread. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask them.
