Give more thoughts, Chewin.
I have very mixed feelings and it's annoying cos a part of me loved it, a part of me hated it, a part of me didn't care.
Odan.
I mean, my position in this PoV thing is basically Poe himself outside our own experience. He's a competent pilot, yes, but from Holdo's PoV he is a nobody who thinks he's a somebody. And that's basically what he is to the Resistance outside our own idea of him because he is a main character. Everything you have said is reasonable and true, but I am taking into account that he is literally a level 5 talking to a level 20. So that whole first bit (my main beef/point) where he smacks talk Holdo believing in his own hype is where I see how he was in the wrong, and shot himself in the foot.
Communication is a two-way street, yes, but who is he really to be chatting shit in a military organisation. But that's his character, the guy who does what needs to be done. I love that he was 'wrong' in the same way he was right.
He confronted her once, and after that it was established that 'she wasn't going to listen', a massive leap if there ever was one. Just like her own massive leap but what crossed her mind was 'oh shit, they can pull info from us'. This was not made clear in the script, nor the fact that Holdo telling Poe, who had has a reputation for shoot first and think later, would have been so opposed to jumping ship that it was probably best to shut him out completely.
But 'probablies' aren't enough to establish a strong counter argument. I leave that as a fault to the script.
What I meant with 'risk free' was that telling her would have been risk free. And it would have, all she would have said is 'yes' or 'no'. Going behind her back would have gone the same way, but he refused to give her a chance. Again, if Poe can't take it to the chest when he knowingly pushes his own authority to his CO, then I can only ever really see a guy who can't take what he gives. From what I remember of Poe, his every interaction with Holdo from the start was never diplomatic, it was hostile, and Holdo being his boss pretty much gave him the least she could have given him.
He notices because it was being done on the screen right in front of him. But again, I'd need to see this film one more time to be absolutely sure. My memory of the events that transpired went like this:
He sees the plan, says 'wtf man', Holdo is like 'it's the only way' (and it kind of really is? They were all going to have to escape somehow since the main ship was running out of fuel and they were going to get blown to bits) and Poe got mad because his awesome plan (which was awesome, not being sarcastic) failed.
I'm ngl, but there was really no feasable way for Finn and Rose to leave the dreadnought anyway. His plan relied on that ship to carry on running, and it was a shot in the dark all in all. Since their little spat resulted on him having 'no other choice', when in fact there were plenty to make (like swallowing your pride and telling your CO sorry and sharing your ideas), Holdo can't really be made accountable for acting the way a CO would in the face of insubordination. Sure she could have been lenient, more accepting, gentler etc. But again, I am seeing it from her PoV, and from her PoV all I see is a pretty boy who thinks he's hot shit when he's not.
Also.
Talking about this movie like this is making me like it more lol.
