I want to give the critics the benefit of the doubt.
I have absolutely no reason to assume that the people taking issue with this casting choice are sexist.

The Doctor has always been male and white.
Any deviation from the original is going to be difficult for long time fans to adjust.
There are many in the camp of "Don't make Link a woman and don't make Samus A Man". [Lame pun].


I disagree with the sentiment. The Doctor is a Time Lord. The Time Lord are a race that can cheat death by regenerating.
The show has demonstrated that Time Lords can change sex during their regeneration.
The Doctor is not even a "traditionally masculine" character. I see no reason why The Doctor can't be female.

If anything could ruin the show, it's the writing.
The actress chosen is decent and varied. She can be dramatic, normal and mundane, fearful, strong, fierce, sad, angry, empathetic, pontificating, joyful etc.

What I'm saying is that she has range. Anyone who plays The Doctor should have range.
I have a feeling that Jodie Whittaker is going to be like Peter Davidson. If I'm right, that could be a good thing. I really liked Peter Davidson's run.

Okay about the whole gender bending thing.

I have stated before why I don't take issue with The Doctor changing gender as a result of a regeneration.
It is actually lore friendly. It is highly unlikely that The Doctor can only be male.


James Bond being a woman. Just create a new female spy with James Bond esque qualities.
The whole point of James Bond is that he is a male fantasy. Most men don't fantasise about being women. So it won't work.
A female spy that is similar to James Bond can work (see Perfect Dark which is basically Goldeneye in the distant future).

On the whole my view is: don't make Link a woman, don't make Samus A Man. However I make an exception for The Doctor because of the above reasons.

Brand new female characters would be pretty awesome.

I still need to watch the last season. New Doctor seems aright I like her outfit. The new lead writer will probably fuck everything up though he has a very mixed track record.

Lara Craft is an amazing action adventurer with lots of Indy qualities. Great example.

Here is another thought on the matter.

If it doesn't interfere with the lore, a female Dr Who is no problem at all. If I have understood the franchise correctly, Dr Who can be anything.

Other established characters in various franchises should be left as they are though.

Axel Foley - American black male
Lara Croft - english female
Shaft - black male
James Bond - Male
Ripley - Female
Sarah Conner - female

I am pretty sure the people who are screaming sexist at the ones complaining about the Dr Who casting would go just as apeshit if Lara Croft suddenly got changed and a white male played her.
