I want to give the critics the benefit of the doubt. I have absolutely no reason to assume that the people taking issue with this casting choice are sexist.
The Doctor has always been male and white. Any deviation from the original is going to be difficult for long time fans to adjust. There are many in the camp of "Don't make Link a woman and don't make Samus A Man". [Lame pun].
I disagree with the sentiment. The Doctor is a Time Lord. The Time Lord are a race that can cheat death by regenerating. The show has demonstrated that Time Lords can change sex during their regeneration. The Doctor is not even a "traditionally masculine" character. I see no reason why The Doctor can't be female.
If anything could ruin the show, it's the writing. The actress chosen is decent and varied. She can be dramatic, normal and mundane, fearful, strong, fierce, sad, angry, empathetic, pontificating, joyful etc.
What I'm saying is that she has range. Anyone who plays The Doctor should have range. I have a feeling that Jodie Whittaker is going to be like Peter Davidson. If I'm right, that could be a good thing. I really liked Peter Davidson's run.
