The shows fixated on her. The Doctor just feels like something of a background character after the pilot when he should be at the forefront of the show, being a new iteration and all. I'd write about it in more depth but you won't want spoilers, so I'll take a broad look at a point of contention for much of season 8 for example. The new doctor's... somewhat different sense of morality. Its a great twist on the formula, and by exploring it properly you'd in turn get a close look at this new Doctor's thought process, yet it more or less falls down to Clara just chastising him and questioning her role travelling with him. Its a defining point of Capaldi's Doctor, and they somehow make it almost all about Clara. There's lots of good stuff and I think Capaldi's performance salvages the season, but some of the writing choices are all over the place dude since Ecelston its been the COMPANION show featuring the Doctor. You're probably right. My experience with classic Who is limited to only a handful of episodes. But its never been felt quite as strongly as it was in season 8. And I was hyped as feck for Capaldi, so it was noticed all the more.
