We got Mélanchon in France, and the minute he gained momentum the whole press went after him...
It's funny because I wanted to answer that post days ago, but then thought  "nah I'm so cynical " and in the meantime there's been a german article about Mélanchon and Corbyn saying the far left are nationalists and therefore as bad as the far right.

Mélanchon has a bit of a bad temper, but he was like one of the main person saying there's a huge issue with climate and we need to take actions NOW, like reduce meat consumption etc etc...and also he was pointing out there's problem with rich people getting richer and poor people getting poorer.
Of course he lacked much diplomacy and did stupid things.
But he's been turned into a boogeyman. Even in France where you can be communist if that's your fancy and no one will bat an eye.

And that JK Rowling sitting on her fat horde of money keeps telling all the kids to vote Lib Dem because Dumbledore forbid she pay taxes on some radical socialist marxist labour agenda.

Good to see some sanity in this Spanish mess.

I know two Spaniards from another forum I visit, one from Madrid and the other from Badalona. Both are extremely negative in their view of the separatists. They say the leaders pushing these they and they argue that even under Franco Catalina was treated well. They are not some oppressed minority or anything like that.

The Washington Post has (perhaps unsurprisingly) suggested the Russians are involved. I don't know if I believe that as even Putin's love of causing chaos isn't likely to overrule business interests in Spain.

Sim I think you have a rather romantic view of the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War. I doubt they were any "better" than the Nationalists in reality, every bit just as likely to put you in some mass grave. Certainly their civil war left deep scars but some individuals like former Prime Minister Zapatero seemed to be quite intent on reopening old wounds and rewriting history, I wouldn't be surprised if that behavior had some role to play in this current crisis.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Rajoy just looks downright incompetent, like he wants to just run away from the whole thing. Not good at all really.
