Well, I finally saw the film and I'm pleased to say it lived up to my expectations. I realize that may not be saying much given DC's track record so I'll add that, to my mind, it's one of the best superhero films from both MARVEL and DC to date. Gal Gadot and Chris Pine comfortably settle in their roles as Steve Trevor and Wonder Woman, and their relationship is gradually and skillfully developed. As far as the supporting cast goes, the first act clearly has the upper hand, with Connie Nielsen and Robin Wright both delivering strong performances as Queen Hippolyta and General Antiope, to the point I'm eager to see them reprise their roles (maybe in a prequel?). The villains are, unfortunately, par for the course for superhero movies, even though the movie toys with the idea that darkness isn't embodied by a single villain but instead wages a silent war within ourselves. It's a notion that had a lot of potential but the third act sadly fumbles with it. Indeed, the third act is a bit of a contradiction, as some of the movie's most poignant moments take place then, but it is also when its weaknesses seep through the most. Wonder Woman does not however, disappoint in the action front, and while there is some noticeable CGI and slow motion, the fights are so well choreographed that I could easily forgive its most glaring examples. The soundtrack, composed by Rupert Gregson-Williams, is outstanding, perfectly matching the action and emotions throughout the film, and well-worth listening to on its own. While it may not have been the Wonder Woman movie some were looking forward to (I'm looking at you, Angry Joe), for my part it is damn close. Probably closer to a 9/10 for me.
