Neat art. I love how the fans come up with so many different styles to represent the characters of the show. I'm still a bit edgy when it comes to Gemsonas though, also know as your personal gem forms. It's an equivalent to the My Little Pony fanbase's original characters at this point.

Gemsonas? I haven't heard of that, what is it?

I see what you mean, however it's just a way for them to cope with their boredom while waiting for new episodes I guess. Personally, I'm intrigued to see if the show will ever introduce a "gem" that identifies with the male pronouns, even though they're all genderless.

Yeah, gems are genderless as stated in the official guide books. They just chose the feminine appearances and pronouns (even though it's implied that they don't reproduce like humans do) but they still are projections of their own gems' chemicals and energy. When the gems break, their holograms disappear and they need a while to recover. Some gems (specially the corrupted, monsters) may never recover, so Garnet and the other Crystal Gems conserve them into bubbles until they'll find a way to heal them and restore them into normal gems. I figure the writers thought it would be simple to give them a pronoun other than "it" or "they", otherwise the gems would sound like machines, or robots. The Crystal Gems we know are more "human" than the ones introduced on the Home World, because they have emotions and they are autonomous.  

As for fusions, when they fuse, it's not actually the "gemstones" that fuse, but their energy and their thoughts that they project which decide to become one entity that will carry on the will of those gemstones. Garnet's fusion is mostly possible because Ruby and Sapphire's chemistry (love and affection in this case) is well synchronized. You can see that both Ruby and Sapphire's gemstones are incorporated in Garnet's design, as they are part of her hands (palms). There's a lot of small details people don't really pay attention to, but once you see them, it makes sense.
