I am not an SJW. I'm not terribly fond of them either. However, I do feel for the sake of balance that someone has to spring to their defence.
Sexism, racism, anti-LGBT, ablest attitudes, classism etc have always been prevalent in both society and in some cases institutionally. To me social justice warriors are the present day versions of Martin Luthor King Junior, Mahatma Gandhi and Emmeline Pankhurst. Sure most of today's social justice warriors are bigoted, misguided, privileged and have no idea what true oppression is. However their hearts are in the right place. They see a world full of injustice. I'm pretty sure if I saw the world though the Social Justice lens I'd be really angry. I'd be fighting very hard to make change happen.
I find Social Justice Warriors frustrating. They want what I want. Equality. True equality. It's just they go about it the wrong way. Shaming cis gendered people. Shaming white people. Shaming men. Shaming heterosexual people. They also seem to be of the idea that if you're a woman, non white, Man (I am not using this term as a pejorative) etc you must be automatically oppressed. I am mixed race and I have no clue what oppression is. I haven't experienced it. Yet under the social justice lens I'm part of a marginalised group, systematically oppressed by a male white patriarchy.
However, I don't think bashing them is productive. There is a world of injustice out there. Religious people being persecuted in certain countries. Women having zero rights in some nations. Racial discrimination etc.
Quite frankly I do have lots of positive things to say about the Social Justice movement. Take gay rights. Take into account same sex marriage and also better treatment of transgender. The LGBT community are the best parts of social justice warrior movement and part of the reason why I'm sympathetic towards inter sectional feminism. I just hope mens right's can be included so that inter sectional feminism can finally be the all inclusive egalitarian movement it wishes to be.
Social Justice Warriors are not all bad. Trouble is that they are so entrenched as ideologies that that they sometimes lose touch with reality. If they can be a little more open minded, a little more self critical and a lot less overzealous then I would be happy to join their ranks.
P.s. I don't think all Social Justice Warriors are narrow minded ideologues that lack self criticism. I am talking about a movement as a whole, not the specific individuals who make it up.
