Societal norms generally set what is (un)acceptable behavior in society/culture, and generally stigmatizes unacceptable behavior (bullying has been considered a portion of it). As an example, the social norms for a student in a classroom would be to pay attention to the teacher, take notes, raise a hand to speak, do the assignment, and ask questions when confused. As a teacher (in short), you would be expected to present the lesson plans and you are not expected to swear in front of the students. For both there are consequences for not conforming to those norms. The student can be kicked out of class, have their grades penalized, detention/suspension/expulsion etc, while teachers can potentially lose their jobs. If political correctness is used to define what types of words are acceptable to be used in conversations then it is a social norm applied to language. The problem occurs when you have people with extremist views (shocking how problems seem to arise from those) that want to limit/punish anything that they find offensive regardless of the actual intent of the speaker. www.simplypsychology.org/social-roles.htmlI so cannot be assed to write a lengthy response here, so I'll just say this: political correctness is characterized by the fact that it undermines the very act of communication in order to remove any possible avenue of dissent. This is different from stigmatizing rudeness, as it's entirely possible to have a productive intellectual discussion without insulting the person you are debating with, Hawkeye.
Regardless, I'm going to follow Crusty's example and withdraw from this discussion, as I feel it has largely run its course. Also, I really need to start spending less time arguing politics on the internet. You'll be able to find me primarily in the Lobby and Media Discussion forums from now on.
No it isn't since the goal is to set a new set of "norms" for communication. Political correctness (social norms) is the very reason why saying a certain six letter word that begins with "n" is heavily stigmatized, although there are obvious double standards with it's usage. "Political correctness" has always been part of the human condition no matter what it's called. The terms just been hijacked by liberal who want to make it so that speech is not offensive, as well as the opposite end extremists who are outraged whenever they're called out on their crap (a la Trump). In other words, there's nothing wrong with political correctness, but there IS something wrong when people try to use it to censor dissenting opinions. That entire practice is not actual political correctness, if the term is used it's being used incorrectly. The correct term is censorship, which actually encompasses your entire definition of "politically correct". To be found "socially acceptable" many people try to hide censorship with the term "politically correct", but they are not the same things. Also: www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/politically%20correctTechnically, any other use of the word is it's misuse.
