Quick thing I just found out about the new canon: In one of the "Legends" novels, this idea was implied, but in "Tarkin" it is confirmed & makes episode 3 a bit cooler (not to mention logical) Among the relics in Chancellor Palpatine/Sidious' office are sculptures (including the relief in the background as he reveals his true identity to Anakin) and misc. art... and this:  It is an ancient Sith Chalice, used for two purposes. Firstly, the obvious one: as an incense burner & meditation totem. Secondly, as a kind of "Dark side Wi-Fi conductor". During the Era preceding the Hyperspace wars, the Sith ruled most of the Galaxy, and naturally had a HQ on Coruscant. They were cold and ruthless, and built several shrines to show their reverence & complete devotion to the Dark side. One such place of worship was never destroyed, but the foundation remained millenia later when the Jedi Order regained control of the capital. The Jedi built their Temple ON THE RUINS of this Sith shrine, believing they could cancel out the Evil energy. (Perhaps forshadowing Yoda living near a "Dark Side Nexus" on Dagobah) To a certain degree, they were successful. Until Palpatine was elected, that is. He not only used this wellspring of Force corruption to cloud the Jedi's minds & make his duplicity easier, but he was able to draw on the Dark side via this chalice in order to make himself nearly invulnerable on most of Coruscant. This explains why he held his own against Master Yoda AND why all Jedi who enter his office are weakened to a comical state. It's also, IMHO a brilliant way for the Jedi to have their own self-righteous machinations backfire horribly.  Author James Luceno is just so great  Seriously, Darth Plagueis was a masterpiece and Tarkin sounds like it might be as well. I've never been disappointed with any of his works. He even made a good Vong book which is not easy, it seems. |
