Personally, I liked Palpatine's schemes but many people found it to be the most boring aspect of the prequels. These are the same twats who list Furious 7 or Harry Potter and Fire-thing of Whatever in their top 3 all-time flicks. Idiots. Any reasonable, grown adult audience member can see & hear clearly that Ewan McGregor & Ian McDiarmid are easily the best thing about the prequels. These performances, these characters' arcs are well done (despite a cheesy line or silly facial expression here or there) The Sidious/Palpatine villain in particular, since his exact machinations were only lightly eluded to in the OT. He is a great antagonist, and he pulls no punches, has no remorse or regret. This role could only be played by the actor who laid the foundation for this build-up in ep. 5 & 6. Sir Ian McDiarmid. Palpatine is the classic "actor playing an actor" role, which is relished by thespians because of the subtlety and immersion required to pull off a believable performance. He had to simultaneously seem malevolent, seductive, paternal, authoritative, calculating & ruthless. A master of his craft.
