A few things I'd like to see in Star Wars Episode VIII Spoilers ahead.
Make Rey less perfect:
Rey messes up from time to time. I'm okay with a character having multiple skills. She can still be a pilot, mechanic, Jedi etc. Just let her get stuff wrong. Make a few bad choices. Learn a few life lessons. Maybe her skill with the force is exceptional but her skill with a lightsaber needs work. Perhaps she will lose against Snoke. Maybe there is a manoeuvre so challenging that Rey cannot pull it off. Poe Dameron then says "I can do that." Maybe she is distracted by a poor decision she made when attempting to repair the Millennium Falcon. This leads to her making a schoolboy error.
Make Finn more awesome:
Let him succeed at something. I'd say the most obvious aspect where he can excel at is de-constructing the tactics of The First Order. I'd like him to be discussing tactics with General Leia. This makes more sense to me. If you have someone with insider knowledge regarding the enemy, perhaps throwing them into the front line is not such a great idea. Having Finn on your side is a huge advantage. Us it!
More Poe Dameron: I want to see more of his piloting exploits. He is the best pilot in the Rebellion and in The Force Awakens we get to see some of his fighting prowess. I'd like to see more of it. Heck I want to see more of his relationships with other pilots. I'd also like to know how he deals with the deaths of his fellow pilots. What makes him want to risk it all to fight The First Order. Also Poe being on the Millennium Falcon taking the helm would be awesome.
Kylo Ren: More back story would be awesome. Why did he turn to the dark side would be fascinating to find out. Rey Version 2.0 versus Kylo Ren Version 2.0 might be exciting with all the training, however I'd rather save this fight till Episode IX. In this film I want to see more of what makes Kylo Ren tick.
Snoke: Keep him mysterious and save the big reveal for Star Wars Episode IX.
Phasma: Nice Armour. Nice Actress. Doesn't do anything in Star Wars The Force Awakens. Maybe she could do more this time. I don't need much from this character. Be in a few scenes and be bad ass. What I'm hoping for is a Boba Fett character. Says little, does little, but every moment she is on screen she is kicking ass and taking names. She only needs about 5 minutes of screen time. I'd rather have 5 minutes of badassery then 10 minutes of doing nothing.
That General That People Are Complaining About: Umm. That guy. He's okay. I don't think this character needs much screen time. His sole purpose is to show us that The First Order has a military hierarchy. He's serviceable. I want there to be more character development on Poe, Kylo, Rey and Finn. I want to see those four characters go through highs and lows. Have moments of triumph and failure. This character is not one of the main four. So I'm okay with him barking orders with little to no development. Let Expanded Universe take care of him.
Returning Cast: General Leia, Luke Skywalker, R2D2, C3PO, Chewbacca etc. For me just being there is enough. They have been in previous films. I really want the spotlight to be on the new cast.
Non Humans: More non human characters would be nice. Honestly, given how much has been said about Star Wars Episode VII's diversity, the vast majority of characters are human. It's too late now to introduce new alien main characters. We have 4 really strong main characters who need time to develop. However encountering lots of aliens along the way would be nice. Tons of alien extras, a few alien minor characters would be cool. Heck I hear in Expanded Universe there is an alien general in The First Order who got the job despite their prejudice against aliens.
I hope there are spin off stories with more aliens. If there was an entire spin off film where there were Togorians, Mon Calamari, Quarren, Kel Dor, Devorians, Zabrask, Cathar etc but no humans I'd still watch it. Heck I'd be very excited. Wow. It's great to see a story where non humans are centre stage.
