One of the misconceptions about dark and grim is that it is no fun.
I disagree with this.

Sometimes a dark fantasy can take audiences into an adventure.
Having heroes combat the darkness in the world around them and within themselves and triumphing is wish fulfilment at it's finest.
If said heroes have great camaraderie whilst fighting the darkness it's even more epic.

I know people want escapism from how grim the real world is. There is a market for a colourful upbeat tone.
However I believe that the light shines brightest in the dark. Stories about people conquering their own fears and insecurities can be inspirational.
Stories about hope in a seemingly hopeless world are fantastic.

The DC universe has the beginnings of a great light versus dark narrative.


The world is being turned upside down by alien invasions and a corrupt society falling apart.
Our heroes are at each other's throats and have their own issues to contend with.
However slowly our heroes learn to deal with their own issues and learn to work together.
The villains fight harder and the casualties are incredibly high. Even though the Justice League is starting to become a cohesive unit, they are still struggling.
However as their camaraderie improves, so does their teamwork. Tactics improve, and soon they triumph over the bad guys, with many sacrifices of course.

Because of the hard work of The Justice League, the world is a better safer place.
At last there is light at the end of the tunnel.

So to Warner Brothers. Stick to your guns.


P.s. I think you can suss out that I loved The Lord of The Rings Trilogy, based on the fact that I made a case for light versus dark type narratives.
