You can't "break the will" of an entire species like that. A constant threat can be adapted to like any other. Starvation and lack of sleep aren't new to humanity either. Fracture their minds? Meaning what exactly? Good luck to whoever has the lofty goals of rebuilding society but that wouldn't be my concern.

How silly! "zombies" would be so easily survivable its pretty much a joke. First of all, they are dead, yes? They will decompose in weeks. First thing to go are the eyes, in days you'll be walking around trying to avoid the equivalent of blind mentally challenged people trying to find and bite you. Which is another thing, assume they magically keep the use of their eyes, how are they even finding you in the first place? I could walk outside eight now and not see another person so long as I avoid the roads.

And lastly, your an idiot if you think people with nothing but teeth and their nails and who completely lack self preservation and the ability to think can take on a modern military. What is the zombie answer to tanks, helicopters, humvees, and fighter jets? Heck, how does a zombie harm a guy in a stab proof vest? Or a plated bullet proof vest?

The idea of a zombie apocalypse in which the zombies somehow spread rapidly even tho they eat their kills, completely collapse world militaries and governments, and continue walking around being a threat to a few roving bands of survivors for months, and even years, is pure fantasy nonsense. 

I mean shit, the fact that you all seem to think you would easily survive is pretty indicative of how fallacious this whole concept is. So you internet nerds are going to survive but trained soldiers and armies hundreds of thousands strong are going to collapse and cease to exist? Yeah, nope. 

Yes, but the premise was "zombie apocalypse," not "zombie outbreak." Apocalypse states the end of civilization has happened. It's possible for a military presence to contain an outbreak assuming proper precautions and all of that, but then it wouldn't be the apocalypse, now would it?


You are assuming total collapse, including military. And the danger with zombies is never their damage, but their ability to infect. Depending on the fiction source, you can have a zombie turn someone new within minutes or days. Either way, it only takes one slip up to lose a soldier, meanwhile you have to arm, support and keep the morale up on however large your armed force is. Not easy to do when the entire support structure of society is gone.

Humans have very different levels of tolerance when they have one ingredient - hope.

Any human in the 30 year war could see other nations were at peace, could know that there would be an end to the fighting, could even possibly see a purpose to the war for their homeland to "win."

None of that exists in an apocalypse scenario. There is no safe haven, there is no happy finish line, there is no rest except the grave. If that's really the case, if there is no hope outside of "I need to stay alive," the survival rates drop by huge margins. In other apocalypse scenarios, this can be mitigated with time, but with zombies, the threat never is truly over. A lifetime of fighting, running and barely surviving with no safe haven, no peace, no help of any kind... it won't kill everyone, but it will break enough people that the remaining survivors would have an uphill battle to reproduce, let alone actually improve life beyond transient subsistence.

An army destroying the world is highly unlikely. The world is fucking huge - marching an armed force across its face, killing everyone they come across has serious logistic problems that are nigh insurmountable.

A nuclear apocalypse would be bad... but you don't lose sleep every night wondering if radiation is going to sneak up on you and bite you. You can reach safe zones where you won't die by eating the food and drinking the water. With zombies, you never reach that level of comfort - it's constant vigilance, every second of every day, against a force that never sleeps and can kill you with a scratch.

That's why it's the worst. Because people would lose their minds trying to defend themselves every second of every day. Even the thirty year war you mentioned confined battle to mostly day time pitched battles, although that wouldn't apply to those civilians who were terrorized by the mercenaries and bandits in the area. As a side note, Witch Hunt/persecutions saw a bye outbreak during the Thirty Year War, lending credence to the fact that people were losing their minds.
