Stannis was said to be the top strategist, and they had him attack Winterfell with 100 men and not even a ladder to scale the walls. See this is one I can at least sort of understand the reasoning behind it though. As I saw it Stannis had sacrificed everything and had be driven by his sense of duty to the point where even as someone who had to have known he was absolutely screwed still couldn't change his course. He had sacrificed his humanity and had just then been abandoned by the person who had convinced him that what he was doing this entire time was justified. Stannis is suppose to have been this cold tactical mastermind and it's true he basically performed a suicidal attack there but I can at least buy from a thematic standpoint why his character would have done that following having lost everything to a belief that turned out to be completely false.
The thing about Stannis though is that he is the one character that would never give up. What happened was that they decided to merge Stannis and Aegon into Jon Snow to streamline the story. Stannis is actually the one who unites the north in the books, like we saw Jon and Sansa do in the show. They did a sloppy job with it though. Since we now got a Stannis that turned into a complete moron. His army was hungry so he butchered about 2000 horses....and they were still hungry. He then built a huge pyre and burned his daughter on it because his army was cold....remove the daughter from the pyre and the army would able to warm themselves by it. I mean they clearly had firewood. And since Jon is now Aegon, it means that Rhaegar named both his sons Aegon....The first one was killed by The mountain a week or two before Jon was born.
