I re-watched the entire series recently. This is some things.
1. I think S1-S3 form a kind of arc in and of themselves, it's like the origin story of Game of Thrones, the universe, characters, etc. And then you have huge events at the end symbolizing the end of that with the Red Wedding.
2. S4-S6 expand the world dramatically, bring in all the other players like Dorne and so on, and also have their own kind of story I think with the finale being kind of Cersei and the conflict with the Sparrows.
I think the quality of the series improved each season, without exception.
Some other things - I actually liked the Boltons, I realized. Flaying is grotesque, but in every other aspect how were they any worse than the Starks? Both Roose and Ramsay seem to be very capable leaders who are loyal and capable, basically instead of lamenting Ned's death in S3 I looked at the series differently and decided that Ramsay etc.. there was a reason they all survived, and that's that they were more reasonable and less prone to Rob Stark like over the top do whatever I want nonsense...
- Tyrion seems to have an incredibly strong instinct for self-preservation, but I don't know if he's politically astute per se, he mostly seems to be the best at summarizing other people's positions and interests, kind of like a reflector for people's thoughts, but his native contribution rely mostly on just being able to maintain a feasting and happy living.
- I can't stand Daenaerys or anything associated with her, she's like a Tolkien Elf in that she's just kind of all powerful with no explanation really, and no real rhyme or reason to her actions. Why exactly does she have to rule in Mereen? LIke really why is "Because I must rule" or something the reason?
Also I don't buy all the magic of the Targaryens.. I mean they simply happened to be where Dragons were, they lived in the right place at the right time, their native contributions seem nil.
- The Night's Watch is probably my favorite group for some reason, they might be the most open organization in Westeros.. unlike everywhere else they don't have any high lord or noble leaders, so everyone's opinion is just kind of just as valid as the next, and as a consequence people seem more invested in the decisions.
