So I was only able to watch the first half of the season that's up on Netflix, what closes off with the Mars Brightest arc. Apparently, the second half won't be available for a while. Anyway, I binged this show over two nights, and then tried to figure out why, since there's quite a bit I didn't enjoy. I came to the conclusion that I was really looking forward to the songs the most, as anything in between is either poorly executed or filler or both. For instance, I've yet to see Gus do anything to earn his self-appointment as manager of the duo. You could easily take him out of the show and nothing would change. Tuesday's family is poorly handled, her brother in particular. Gyselle's character and motivations were so transparent that it boggled my mind how the rest of the characters react to a certain event. In one episode, Carole & Tuesday are confronted with a harsh reality, something expected as they're going through the (ultra-fast) motions of launching their musical career, and I thought, "Okay, they need to hit their lowest point so they can come back stronger." Their lowest point barely lasted 10 seconds, as it was immediately cut to shreds by another character boosting up their morale through the sky. Setting up Ertegun early on as a potential obstacle could've worked if we had been given any indication as to how the jury votes. For instance, if it had been explained that all judges need to agree during a particular stage, that would've set up some tension that I never felt was present.
To sum up, I stayed for the music. I was disappointed that I didn't get to see the 7-minute event the first episode boasts about.
Oh, and the Mermaid Sisters were robbed.
