This is not a good movie but it's such a guilty pleasure. I rewatched it yesterday on Netflix and it hasn't really aged well. The CGI is pretty bad, probably even by early 2000 standards, the idea of a civilization that could control time thanks to a meteorite that crashed during a planetary alignment is dumb enough (as is anything and everything related to this plot) but the recreation of said civilization at one point in the movie is laughably bad, performances feel more at home in a cheesy 90s action flick, etc., etc. However, for all its faults, one can't deny that Jolie really captured the essence of the sexy and playful, pre-reboot, Lara Croft and, quite surprisingly, so did the movie in relation to the games. As I watched the movie I got the feeling that certain scenes could very well work as levels in a game: fighting the monsters, escaping the collapsing cave, even exploring the temples in Cambodia. I was also mildly surprised that they put some thought into how Lara's able to carry so much ammo with the design of her backpack. The movie also does feature its share of puzzles for Lara to solve, even if they're extremely far-fetched, to the point one is left wondering how Lara even figured them out (not to mention their creators must've been seriously high when they conceived these traps/puzzles). The action itself is quite entertaining, especially the sequence in Croft Manor. It's a dumb, fun, action flick, and Jolie provides some badass eye-candy to be sure, deserving of an average or below average rating but it's a guilty pleasure of mine. Don't recall much about its sequel though, guess I'll have to re-watch it. The fact that Gerard Butler is involved doesn't bode well. EDIT: Damn, Cradle of Life is such a boring slog to watch.
