It's interesting that only small countries like Turkey have coups, while everyone else suffers through elections. I am not sure how I feel about this coup. They could end up in a good place but then again maybe not, who knows? Turkey is far from small. It has a pretty decent sized population and it's in a very good place. Turkey is the country where east meets west, so it's going to get a fair amount of land trade. What I'm surprised is that none of the larger nations are coming in to protect democracy. *Cough US cough* >.> If anyone were to have come in to "protect democracy", which side would've they been fighting on? Serious question. Obviously yes, military coups in general are bad. People die. BUUUT... Erdogan isn't exactly a poster boy for democracy, and military coups in Turkey have a history of being quite a bit different than ones in other countries. They've been less about the military seizing total control and ruling with their own iron fist and more about reestablishing a more secular democracy more in line with Atatürk's ideals of what Turkey should be by force. It's all moot though, since this looks like it'll go down as a failed attempt. Erdogan will solidify his power even more and move Turkey even further towards just being a flat out dictatorship. Fully expect him to now stay in charge for the rest of his life, or at least ensure that any successor is someone handpicked from his own party.
