Is there such an option?

Or are you actually getting profile notifications every time a thread updates? I don't know, but you could try the option to "mark as read -> forever"

But I think marking it as read forever would stop it from bumping to the top of your participated threads list.

I just think I got flooded as the settings seemed to be turned off then when I changed them back I got flooded with notices for updated threads. It's calmed down now.
