I enjoy the Silmarillion over LOTR as a book. I think Tolkien's prose and story telling suits this kind of novel far more than LOTR. Also it's dark, bleak, and awfully depressing. It's funny when people compare and contrast Tolkien to Martin when Tolkien is far more tragic in many ways. Sure the 'good guys win' at the end of the Silmarillion too, but an entire country gets destroyed in the process. Everything in between is just a consecutive kick to the balls. Still, it's a different, more 'classic' type of tragedy. I hate to be the one to start a TvsM war but it's just a little irony I like to expose once in a blue moon. Or every time I mention the book.
