I recommend it to fans of dark fantasy. It's a really interesting take on the genre. Lawrence Watt-Evans is my favorite writer, in general. 2. Men-at-Arms (by Terry Pratchett) - Second Discworld book featuring the Ankh Morpork City Watch. The entire Discworld series is a hilarious combination of fantasy and political satire, and the Watch books are especially fun reads. 3. With A Single Spell (by Lawrence Watt-Evans) - Second book of the Legends of Ethshar. I like the Ethshar novels because they focus on mundane characters in a world rife with different schools of magic (wizardry, demonology, etc.). The way magic works in these novels is quite unique.

I think Tolkien's prose and story telling suits this kind of novel far more than LOTR. Also it's dark, bleak, and awfully depressing. It's funny when people compare and contrast Tolkien to Martin when Tolkien is far more tragic in many ways. Sure the 'good guys win' at the end of the Silmarillion too, but an entire country gets destroyed in the process. Everything in between is just a consecutive kick to the balls. Still, it's a different, more 'classic' type of tragedy. I hate to be the one to start a TvsM war but it's just a little irony I like to expose once in a blue moon. Or every time I mention the book.

If anything his work has just grown in popularity as the years have gone by, and his stories are still relevant to this day. Martin is "new" so we don't know yet if he will be considered as great as Tolkien. I am not sure he will, though.

Tolkien does a more high fantasy though it is quite dark if you read between the lines (talking about LOTR need to read the rest one day) and Martin does a low fantasy. Those two sub-genres are really hard to compare since they will always focus on very different aspects. As for my top three I have to ponder that...
