So how was the trans character written badly btw? I hope they didn't do any cringey stuff >< She's not particularly notable as a character aside from that, a side-quest giver. If you ask her why she came to Andromeda (something you can ask most characters in the game) she says she did it to live a new life as whatever her name is now instead of whatever her old one is (I can't remember either she's that unmemorable, this thing aside). And in doing so she tells you she's trans. Bad for mostly two reasons. Getting called by your old name for many generally does a number on the whole dysphoria angle, which isn't particularly pleasant, so much so that the concept has its own suitably melodramatic term, 'Dead-naming'. I know that isn't the case for all transgender people. But for someone who went to such lengths as galaxy hopping to forget her old life and name, and as said in I believe her own terms to get a fresh start, the idea really is quite ludicrous that she'd admit this to Ryder, having just then met. Not rebooting much of your life if you go proclaiming your past to every bob-a-job who comes wandering into town, pathfinder or no, and its... not something I'd see many trans people being all that comfortable doing, let me put it that way, Second reason rolling off of that, that given the lack of understanding, she's clearly lazily written that way as a way to communicate 'HERE IS OUR TRANS CHARACTER' for the only vaguely 'SJW' (ugh) kinda thing I feel I've found in MEA: representation tick-boxing. For both reasons, she doesn't really represent anyone in my mind. Not really the biggest deal to me all the same, because Rawgrim's right. One not particularly notable character amongst MEA's many anyway if you ignore all that. But nice that they're trying to fix it... I guess? X) I think if a company just adds trans characters just to qualify as being progressive in that regard, they might as well not add one. No trans is better than shitty token trans. And extra downside when this happens, I have noticed, is that trans gamers kind of get blamed for it by a lot of people. "They whined about games needing trans characters, and that is why we got a shit character in out game!" Stuff like that. Wanna know how you write a trans character? It isn't difficult at all. Lets say the character was male but is now female. A female in a male body. The body is irrelevant, no? So here is the trick. Just write a FEMALE character. Just mention that the character is trans in passing or something. Just establish it and move on to the personality, goals, hopes, and dreams of the character.
