I think the cluster fuck that was Iraqi Freedom just ground us down. It's odd though, because you still have all these people here screaming let's bomb Iran or let's get into a d*** measuring contest with Russia and or China despite everything that happened in Iraq.

Yes, I know. Sorry, my comment didn't make much sense did it. Just ment that we have a habit of making bad choices that lead to situations like that.

You mentioned genocide and atrocities as the issues you were concerned about, so I thought military response was a reasonable interpretation since it's the sort of help that would actually do anything about that.

Carpet bombing was a tangent on Ted Cruz, because it's never a bad time to attack Ted Cruz.

I think it sucks but intervention rarely works without clearly defined and realistic goals (as in, not 'topple Saddam and install a western secular democracy')

And humanitarian aid also is a nice idea but as governments do it, it often seems like throwing money down the drain if you're sending it to an unstable region and it ends up in the hands of the people committing the genocide to begin with.

As individuals, donating to charities targeting specific issues can have an impact, but most people have bills to pay and stuff to buy that are more important to them, which is selfish but I don't know if I can call it a moral failing.

If I were donating to a charity I would want it to go to a local charity to help address problems close to home rather than on the other side of the world, frankly.
