I was just browsing a popular Metroid subreddit today when I came across what appeared to be design documents for a new Metroid game for Nintendo's new console. The link has been taken down since then, but I'm sure someone will repost it. Here's the gist of what I read.
The game will serve as a prequel to Metroid: Zero Mission, taking place soon after Samus leaves her home world of Zebes to rejoin human society at the age of 14.
During the game, Samus will be attending the Galactic Federation Academy on the Federation capital world of Daiban.
As a disciplinary measure for an unspecified transgression, General Adam Malkovich will be forced to teach at the academy for a semester.
The object of the game will be to get high enough of a grade to impress General Malkovich, while balancing Samus's studies with her social life and fending off sporadic space pirate raids.
The game will use an over the shoulder camera, making it easy for Samus Daiban's mega-vermin.
In an internal memo, Metroid co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto expressed disappointment in Metroid: Other M's modest sales. He said that while he personally thought that Samus was cute in Metroid: Other M, she would likely need a moe redesign in order to appeal to modern audiences.
While there is no official title for this game, Metroid: High School Mission, and Metroid High have been suggested.
The game is slated for a Q2 2017 release.
What do you think, will this game be received any better than Metroid Prime: Federation Force? Will this change of direction be enough for Nintendo to revive the franchise?
