The protocol for consent prior to sexual procedures requires that the person performing the act explain to him or her the procedure, expectations pre-coitus and post-coitus, risks and adverse effects, and any toys involved. A witness must be present during the explanation. The client, in this circumstance the "partner", must be allowed to answer questions to clarify the sex. If all client inquiries are answered, informed consent form must be signed by the client and the witness. If the client is incapable of or unable to verbalize informed consent, then the client's assigned proxy must be notified.
