I saw the recommended movie Enemy With Jake Gyllenhaal. I’d highly urge people to see it without outside knowledge of the story itself. If you like thought-provoking dramas, it’s for you. Sepia & Black. That visual theme seems to cover the entirety of the film - according the creators, it was meant to give this sort of oppressive, bleak vibe. Well, it worked to produce an unnerving and undeniably eerie movie. The writer of the original novel “The Double” must‘ve been a big fan of Metaphorical High Art like Jacob‘s Ladder or Silent Hill 2. My personal interpretation being that our protagonist is a man flung into a sort of Purgatory, inexorably juxtaposed with the life he has and the life he wanted. One of the actresses seemed to believe the mother‘s controlling nature was the source of the symbolic spider, and I‘m inclined to agree. *Opens Refrigerator, Finds Blueberries* Great movie that deserves a second watch. Jurassic World…hmm. There were definitely some nice surprises. Thematically, it was smart of them to add the social aspect of the wild and “dangerous” animals, something I haven’t seen since reading Life of Pi. Seeing the park in a more successful, modern setting was neat enough, I suppose. Outside of that, the bits that made it great were definitely the action scenes and the CGI. ILM’s gotten to the point of photorealism and it really sells when looking at some of these reptiles up close. How they shot the final dino-related scene is pretty damn impressive from both a technical perspective and just watching the damn thing play out. Acting is about what you’d expect for a Spielburg-esque Action-Adventure movie. Chris Pratt does his Chris Pratt thing, the kids and redhead-what’s-her-face are alright, the rest isn’t very memorable. “Indominus Rex”? Please. Naming yourself something like Indominus is practically taking a megaphone to everyone that you’re some sort of life-consuming source of evil, which is unoriginal and cliché at best. ( ͡͡ ° ͜ ʖ ͡ °)
Overall I enjoyed it more than the sequels, though it’s hard to hold onto the same novelty as the original Jurassic Park did. Still, it’s pretty good. Last, but not least, I saw Mortal Kombat: Legacy. A Fan-Made series of shorts that’s vastly superior to the original film, I feel the urge to see the next one pretty damn soon. I actually liked the original for its action scenes and setting that adhered closer to what most people associate with Mortal Kombat, despite the hilariously bad acting less-than-intriguing story. Legacy takes the problems of the originals and chucks them out the window, aiming for “Gritty Realism with a bit of Mysticism”, and they totally got it right. You’ll actually care about the characters, lore plays a larger role, and fight scenes maintain the brutal nature while still being grounded in reality…with a few exceptions. If you always wanted a great Mortal Kombat story, stray away from the games and try this instead. You’ll be a happy Pandality.
