It's not the most compelling story, certainly nothing to compete with the slick production of The Martian or The Walk, but it does have its moments - in particular a fairly intense scene where Michael Shannon's sleazy real estate foreclosure broker gives a monologue that lays out how every agency colluded to allow the housing bubble to take place, make a ton of money, and turn him into something he hates.

Loved every minute of this last night. Watched it after I had finished The Blob... 7/10 as it's just plain cheezy fun and they know it's a cheezy movie so I don't think any of the leads were playing it straight.. I had a ton of fun watching this.

It's beautifully shot and acted, and surprisingly funny--just what was needed to wash away the bad taste left by Ridley Scott's previous scifi film Prometheus. Thematically, The Martian not about anything that a million other movies haven't been about (the indomitability of the human spirit, the power of teamwork, "Yes we can!", etc.), and there is admittedly a very large amount of overlap between this film and Ron Howards's Apollo 13, but it's still nice to see a film that celebrates science and achievement without tacking on any kind of spiritual or religious undertones.

The story was pretty meh and the acting was alright. but then giant robots start punching giant monsters and my inner 9 year old goes "BEST MOVIE EVER!".

But it certainly wasn't as good as I had thought it could have been. Mostly all the character dialogue. It was not good, as if it were written by high school students. Some of those lines, and that the actors delivered them straight faced. .. But the Velociraptors were very cool.
