Its pretty disturbing when you consider the fact that Jesus never preached about prosperity. In fact, just the opposite. Right in the fucking bible that Christians pretend to take seriously: Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. It makes you wonder if these prosperity preachers are aware of just how full of shit they are and are simply in it for the money (thus being aware of the fact that they're grifters), maybe they somehow actually believe what they're preaching, or maybe somewhere in between; having to deal w/ the cognitive dissonance. I would say all of the above... 10 years I was there. How the fucking hell did I manage that, I have no idea. But it was in the last 2 to 3 years that I got restless and thought of leaving.. The only fun thing was that most of the women there were total hornbags. You would not believe some of the shit that went on outside the church or during the week.. Oh and you know those passages in Matthew and John about how to treat the poor, well the attitude from the pulpit was "well screw you jack we're OK" and the poor have themselves to blame for being poor. I have no idea in the time since if this attitude, and others have changed much. I really do not want to go back to find out.. Once I had left I became an outcast anyway and people treated me as such. Even face to face, or acted as if they didn't know me.Ten years is ten years too many. As for the women being total hornbags, yeah I can see that. Sexual repression can turn people into freaks. Yeah, I don't get that part. It seems like a tough leap to make between helping poor people, to poverty being a character flaw or a choice (Reagan once said of homelessness: you might say that these people are homeless by choice). Maybe it makes people who were born into wealth, rather than having built it up from scratch, better about themselves, as if wealth and poverty are traits. I don't know. If I were a betting man, and I kind of am, I would bet against your former fellow churchgoers have changed at all. That almost sounds like a cult you were in, though that doesn't seem to be the case, and you're now persona non grata to their little group. I'm surprised that there haven't been any attempts from them to try to bring you back into the fold. Sounds like they're deep into that prosperity gospel bullshit. I thought Jesus said that the coin is for the Caesar. I think so. A more modern interpretation of this would be for government workers who are unable to perform their duties due to their religious beliefs. They have freedom to worship as they wish on their free time, but when at work, they may have to make accommodations between their religious beliefs and their duties as a public employee, their religious beliefs would have to take a backseat to their duties at work, as they must render [their skills and labor] unto Caesar (the government) that which is Caesar. I don't know if that's an adequate interpretation, but I hope you got some idea of what I'm saying. I thought Jesus said that the coin is for the Caesar. Yeah, and also that the rich should give everything to the poor. And that it's harder to have sex with a camel than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven (or something like that - I'm paraphrasing here). Basically, American Christianity was hijacked by conservative fundamentalists back in the 60's and perverted nearly everything Jesus stood for. For a guy who said the meek, generous and merciful would be the most blessed, his followers seems to be incredibly judgmental, materialistic and unforgiving. But that's getting a little off topic, isn't it? Fashion shows! Also, they talk a lot about gays and gay marriage despite the fact that Jesus never said a goddamn thing about either. And that fashion show is gone after this year, my friend.
