I didn't like the BSN's policy of just banning threads that touched upon news and politics altogether because let's face it, we're adults here. But at the same time, discussions on politics, current events, religions, philosophy, etc can easily inflame a userbase. And I'm worried about potential flare ups once the "high" of a new forum wears off. So to that end, I believe that the General Lobby ought to be seen as a more light hearted section discussing things that were otherwise seen on the original Off Topic and opening up a new, separate forum section to handle more controversial topics. It enables people to engage in heated debates if necessary but also emphasises that you keep potentially aggressive or partisan behaviour away from the General Lobby area.
It's not really a pressing concern right now, and should probably be something that ought to be discussed and planned out once we have a proper moderation team going on and more ground rules in general. I like to think that most of the Lobby is either apolitical, or happy to separate their politics from engaging with others. But again, these issues are controversial for a reason and I think if they are allowed to be discussed here, there needs to be a way to separate them from the General Lobby area or else interesting topics of discussion may get buried under partisan shitfighting and angry users.
