Yeah, better let my sub-semi-conscious processes the matter in a few hours and find the better answer than rush it to write a comment.
When the life situation is hopeless, and fraud and milking people with crappy products is high in a 'free trade and industry' country, and the state would be able and trustworthy, actually giving it such power can benefit all. In this situation, people feel they're part of the state and it's not elite/pleb relationship.
Indeed it needs WH40k Imperium style commitment.
At a light level, some 20% tax, Anti-Fraud laws, Punishment for Low-Quality, smart import/export tariffs and trying to save some old industry by subsidy can work well.
