European metal versus North-American metal. Discuss. Both are great in different ways. Both continents had their own multiple breakthroughs in metal at several times. San Francisco Bay area had thrash metal pop up around the early 80's along the likes of Exodus, Metallica Megadeth, Testament etc. Several years later the Tampa death metal scene in Florida happened. Bands like Death, Obituary, Morbid Angel, Diecide came onto the scene shortly followed by other death metal bands from New York such as Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation. Most of this happened around the mid-late 80's and early 90's. Meanwhile across the ocean, Sweden started sprouting out some more awesome metal bands at around the same time the Tampa scene was happening. Swedish metal bands like Entombed, Grave, Unleashed, Dismember started to get noticed with their own unique style that was a bit different than their American counterparts. Then the grindcore scene in Birmingham, England which gave birth to bands like Carcass and Napalm Death. Well, that's mostly history but I think even today a lot of bands have something different to offer. I find that a lot of the European bands tend to be a bit more melodic or epic while some bands in America usually aim for a more brutal assault to the ears. Metal is diverse and, as Pat O'Brien of Cannibal Corpse said, "Metal is metal. It's universal." edit-Brazil also had some good metal bands. Obviously, Sepultura probably being the biggest.
