Ironically, my Scottish ancestors favored the Union because it allowed them to trade with the English colonies. They even referred to Scotland as "North Britain." Another was accused, pre-Union, of "fostering the illegal trade with Scotland." Scandalous! I'm torn: knowing Scotland's tragic history, things didn't go so well when they were independent. On the other hand, no one likes being taken for granted. My Scottish uncle, may he rest in peace, would have favored independence.

When I was very young my father would come and up and tell me stories including, and I am sure he made most of them up, about how St. George killed the dragon. If they succeeded last time it would have been an economic disaster for them. Heck not even the bank of Scotland was going to stick around and they were to go through a real slog to gain access to the EU and I doubt they would get favorable terms of membership, Any new currency would be extremely volatile and discourage investment. Not to mention public expenditure would obviously decline resulting in less public development. I'm not against the concept of an independent Scotland, and I can see why they'd want to leave the union beyond national pride (England's general more conservative favorability compared to the more liberal scots for example) But they should be careful about how and when they go about it and to actually try and take actions to ensure that when they do leave the union it won't be at such a costly price, not just recklessly charge for independence.
