New battle system. I have seen a video of the combat system. It looks pretty cool.
I love the old turn based combat of Final Fantasy games. I really dig Final Fantasy VII (heck I'm playing it at the moment).
However I do accept that Square Enix wants to do something a bit more action orientated. I'm not against a blend of old school "Active Time Battle" system and hack and slash. So here is my proposal.
When your active time battle gauge fills up you can perform an action from the menu, just like you could in the original FFVII
Heavy Attack - Dealing more damage than regular attacks and looks a bit flashy Magic - Cast spells from materia Summon - Cast summons from materia Other commands - Perform commands from command materia Item - use an item Limit Break - When limit break guage is full you can use a character specific ultimate ability
Whilst you're waiting for your ATB guage to fill up you can move around on the battle field and perform quick attacks. These don't deal anywhere near as much as heavy attacks. In addition you can switch between characters. Each character will also have their own distinct fighting styles with strengths and weaknesses.
Cloud - Moderate speed, heavy damage melee attacks Barret - Rapid fire ranged damage (unless he has a melee weapon equipped) Tifa - Low damage per hit, but a very fast flurry of hits. Fast paced fighter since she has no weapons equipped. Aeris - Moderate speed, low damage, melee attacker with longer reach than Cloud. Red XIII - Vicious mauling attacks. Can tackle foes to the ground and rip them to shreds. Melee attacks can even cause bleeding damage to organic targets Cait Sith - Slow unwieldy melee character that sometimes deals heavy damage, sometimes deals weak sauce damage and sometimes inflicts status effects. Completely unpredictable. Yuffie - Mixture of melee and ranged combatant. Doesn't have the long range of Barret and Vincent, but is decent as a fast mid range combatant. Can also sneak to perform stealthy kills. High chance of pre emptive attacks if Yuffie is in your party. Vincent - Mid range shooter, or long range sniper depending on what weapon you've equipped him with. When shape shifted he becomes a powerhouse brawler. Cid - This character will have the longest reach of any melee character. He can wound foes potentially inflicting bleeding, and is acrobatic jumping back and forth between foes with ease. Not the most damaging melee character, but can take a few hits and is evasive, though not as tanky as Cloud and not as evasive as Tifa.
When it comes to melee combat, no character will come out on top. Each will have their own strengths and weaknesses. Different effective ranges, critical chances, some with possibility of landing negative effects, different speed and damage per hit. So rather than picking a party member because they dish out a lot of damage, you might have to think, which party member will be most effective for this situation. This should hopefully make each character fight differently and feel unique outside of limit breaks.
As for weapons, gear and materia: I hope the developers keep everything that was in the original game plus add new items.
Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part, but what I've seen doesn't look all that different to what I've described.
Anyway. What do you think?
