Hey guys, since we have this fancy new section in this fancy new forum I thought I'd try to get some talk about comic books going. Well, urm, so
I like them!
Used to be an avid reader of superhero comics when I was a teenager, mostly from the Big 2, like X-Men, Wolverine, Batman, Spider-Man, Batman, Justice League and occasionally other titles like Lobo or Garth Ennis's Hitman. Oh, and pretty much every crossover I could get my hands on, loved those! And stuff like Danger Girl, Darkchylde, a bit Witchblade here and there. Other titles I forgot now. Back then I was also limited by the fact that by far not everything that was released made it to Germany (and I had to shudder when I looked at the translations in some of the earliest X-Men titles I owned when I found them in a box a while ago).
Then I reached a point in about the first half of the 2000s where I realized that the X-Men I then read about in the comics had changed a lot from the ones I fell in love with when I was younger. Slowly but steady I reduced my input, up to completely stopping to read any of the onging mainstream superhero stuff. For quite a while than my contact with the medium consisted of reading up on the works of folks like Frank Miller and Alan Moore, with some more obscure European comics thrown into the mix.
Watchmen especially became sort of an obsession of mine, and Art Spiegelman's
Maus turned out to be something I could show to and discuss with people who thought they weren't interested in comics at all.
It was actually via the library that I once again broadened my horizon after that. I realized that there was a lot of interesting stuff above and beyond superheroes. I started reading titles like
Fables,
Y: The Last Man,
100 Bullets,
DMZ, the great
Transmetropolitan, and quite a few more. I also found my third big love in comics after the teenage crush on 90s
X-Men and my serious relationship with
Watchmen later on - Neil Gaiman's
Sandman (observant people might have gotten the idea from my avatar ^^).
Over the course of the last year I once again started an attempt to get to know new stuff, and for the first time in forever there were actually some Marvel titles among the comic books I started buying. Especially Matt Fraction's
Hawkeye run and the new
Ms. Marvel series starring Kamala Khan caught my eye, as well as
Runaways and a somewhat Doctor Who-ish
Silver Surfer. Aside from those I gave a few other comics a try, and found myself really liking
Saga,
Sex Criminals and
Rat Queens.I also freaked out when I saw what madness today's Archie comics turned out to be (
Archie vs Predator? Yeeeeah!)
. Archie actually was my probably very first ever comic, given to me when I was 5 or so by my cousins from Canada. Naturally they were written in a language I didn't learn until years later. But when I randomly discovered them while helping my parents move two years ago I realized I remembered more or less every panel. 'twas fun finally reading them! I'm planning on reading a sort of reboot that's coming in the near future. Aaaanyways, those are my tired ramblings about my life's story in comic books. ^^'
What's up with you folks, what do you like or dislike? Are you Marvel or DC fanatics? Do you only read original language
Les aventures de TinTin? Are you getting funny feelings in your pants when thinking about Frank Miller's upcoming
The Dark Knight III: The Master Race? Share!
