Be it from a movie, game, or TV show, this is a soundtrack that could very well be called a work of art... well, at least by you. The criteria is entirely subjective, of course, but feel free to explain your choice, if you so desire. My own personal criteria may vary a bit, but in general the soundtrack must have a decent number of good-to-great tracks for me to consider it great. These are tracks that are well-worth listening to on their own, powerful enough to tell a story divorced from their source. It's a soundtrack that is able to elevate even the most mediocre/average of films. My list is rather large (I think), but I'll start with one example: It's probably no coincidence Meet Joe Black is one of my favourite films. Composed by Thomas Newman, who also previously colaborated with director Martin Brest in Scent of a Woman, this soundtrack can be incredibly moving, romantic, playful, even ethereal at times. "That Next Place" is one of its best tracks, but so are "Someone Else," "Whisper of a Thrill," or "A frequent thing," to mention a few. There are only a handful of leitmotivs throughout the movie, that are present in these tracks, but they're so beautiful. For instance, you can spot the same one (let's call it, the 'letting go' theme) in "Walkaway" and "That Next Place." Then, of course, there's the romantic leitmotif that plays during the love scene ("Whisper of a Thrill") or when Alan reminisces about his wife ("Cold Lamb Sandwich"). There's also what we could call the 'ethereal' leitmotif, or Death's theme, present in "A frequent thing," later mixed in with the romantic leitmotif in "Someone Else" as Susan finally realizes the truth. Like I said, these are a handful of themes but are expertly used to tell a story. It's a fitting soundtrack for one of my favourite movies.
