Depends on the gun.

A small caliber bullet like say a pistol can be blocked by a sufficiently thick book. Still hurts like hell though because all that energy still applies, might aswell take a full force baseball bat swing to the gut.
A high powered rifle however will punch clean through ... and will have just not only put a bullet into the guy, but also a crapton of paper bits into the wound that's going to be a bitch to remove and likely fester quite nicely with whatever crap was on there.

.50 AE version. From a foot away (that's ~30cm) ... the force of the recoil from that pistol alone can break an untrained shooters wrist (nevermind what the recoiling gun can do if it physically hits something, like say smash a nose in real good), what on earth made them think he'd survive that?

Even IF the book were to stop the bullet (which it fucking won't, that's an .50 AE!) that's still ~1,7kJ muzzle energy ... a highpowered industrial jackhammer impacts with less than 100J (0,1kJ) and I doubt that boy would voluntarily take one of those to the chest, ... so IF that book were to block the penetration, the sheer kinetic energy will shatter his bloody ribcage, perforate his organs with bone splinters and whatever's left is going to get smashed into a blood pulp by the impact. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if the book itself were to end up inside that idiot.

The hell were they thinking? Were they even thinking? And who sold this idiot a .50 AE IMI Desert Eagle if he doesn't even know something as simple as: get shot = bad?
