So I decided to do my Dissertation on video game narrative. It'll go something along the lines of: 'The Interactive Medium and its Evolution'. It'll be more about video games tho. It'll explore mediums, their own evolution, how literary works were genres in their time etc etc. However, it'll focus more on Tolkien's 'On Faerie Stories' essay which is the go-to essay for your whole suspension of disbelief stuff which goes perfectly with gaming once you've read it. I'm set for Literary Theory. Will be incorporating Barthes, Sydney etc. Just need help for the gaming side of things. Any essays or literature you guys know about would help tremendously; interviews, blog posts, articles, anything. Even if it's a youtube video or a channel that does a lot of these things I can contact them and ask them the same question. Games are a new medium, we're in the midst of its own academic legitimacy (university courses for example) and it already has its own history of 'classics'. Still, due to its early introduction and rapid rate of evolution, its stagnated in artistry as its become more of a multi-million investment rather than a creative project. Good art is usually produced during economic prosperity (which is why there are periods where more good stuff is produced than bad stuff) and we all know we're in an economic slump, so that doesn't help the medium at all. Furthermore due to its age, not much has been written on the medium, and since its still in that grey area where video games are 'dumb fun' by most people, there obviously will be hard to come by. As of now I've only 'Why Adventure Games Don't Have to Suck' by Ron Gilbert. grumpygamer.com/why_adventure_games_suckAnymore of this would be great. Thank you guys in advance. I've got a year+ for this, but I want to start now.
