Yeah, I hear this kind of thing a lot in religious debates and it always makes me cringe when people say this. People think evolution is this one ladder we're all climbing. It doesn't work that way. People need to get this idea of "less evolved" and "more evolved" out of their heads. Besides there are plenty of apes out there that are much smarter then some of these people already. I believe it's an innate superiourity complex. Nearly ever person I know makes the distiction between humans and animals, as if humanity transcended the realms of nature and simply is, rather than being simply another species amongst all those inhabiting this planet. I mean seriously, you tell a person that humans are an animal species and they'll look at you with such disbelief as if you just grew a second head. The basic truth of it seems so alien that it's unthinkable to most people. We and animals, the same thing? Can't be ... Right and I don't get it. You can look at plenty of animals and point out senses they have that are superior to us. Birds can see things we can't, dogs have a much superior sense of smell to us and so on. Yeah, humans have a pretty nice one with our brains and hands that are great for intricate tasks but that doesn't suddenly make us so much more special. What's funny is how offended some people get over it or how they try and twist it. Why? Life is a pretty incredible thing on its own. Why do we need some special distinction that makes us even more special to the life around us? Seems absurd to me but I know there's plenty of people that genuinely think this way.
