10,000 is not that large of a selection size. Instead of letting the most base and simplistic of humanity be the ones to send messages, why not form a project of our greatest thinkers, artists, poets and scientists? Instead of a cross-section of people writing 255 characters while on the shitter? You can do that through the Twitter API as well. Most of these people have twitter accounts. Better than spending time, resources building a system that would take a lot of work to be on the level as the amount of work which went into building a system like twitter. If i had to make a guess on the text size I would look at how much is needed to send 1 byte to outer space, let us not forget, this is a completely different meduim. Putting this in perspective, saying 10,000 is not a huge number is simplifying the issue. Take this for example, you have discovered a medium that is able to send bits but it takes an hour. In that perspective, 10,000 would be a significantly huge sample size. Yes, all true... but this is the message we are sending to possibly our first extra-terrestrial civilization in the history of our planet. I think spending more thought and effort into it than we put into Angry Birds is not an unreasonable concept.
