I thought it was absolutely fantastic. There were plenty of hiccups, but like the ME story, I generally liked the plot. I'll get into that in a bit.
Granted, I also think that it's relatively unrelated to most of the universe. The advertising campaign was a complete misnomer as well. I don't see how the 'Hunt the Truth/Master Chief' story could have been sacrificed for the current plot. If anything, it enhances both.
None of the current issues in the universe were addressed; Is ONI over reaching its authority and becoming a police state? Is the insurrection on the cusp of war with the UNSC and UEG? Are the Forerunner building up for a return? Are the Flood? There are about a dozen open plots right now in the universe, and sans resolving the 'Didact's Hand' plot with Jul M'dama, the game doesn't address any of it.
There are no questions or plots answered with Halo 5. Only new questions and plots. That's the one thing I don't like about it. It doesn't even try to bring anything together, just raises more issues.
And, in several instances, it does expedite the lore. We see exactly where and how the MC goes AWOL and why, for example... whereas in the comics, it's implied that ONI lost track of him and Blue Team months ago.
Multiplayer is, bar none, the best MP experience for Halo to date. The only problem is the lack of gametypes (which are coming), and the lack of disparity in map size.
Warzone is by far the greatest variant of Halo I have ever played. The only gripe is the bitches who are playing it being bitches. But you can't help that.
Overall, H5 has a great skeleton, but feels a bit bare bones. The Campaign feels less like a story of its own, and more of a teaser. I like it, but there's not a lot of depth behind it, especially for the universe and characterization. You don't really get any change with the team or conflict.
