The first issue of the Life is Strange comic is out now! Naturally, I bought it and will read it tonight. I'll post my thoughts later. Okay, I'm back. Let's see... - Length: Disappointingly short. Of course, it depends on what you use as a baseline. Issue #1 has a total of 32 pages, 22 of which are story, with the remaining 10 being covers, variants, etc. This is a standard length for a comic book. However, this is a mini-series that will run for 3 issues, if I'm not mistaken. The Korra comic books, also comprised of 3 issues, have a total of 70+ pages each.
- Story: Takes place a year after the events of the game. Some lines hint at a few characters possibly having survived the tornado. Neither character looks like they've really processed what happened and time returns to play tricks on Max again. It's an interesting twist and I'm curious to see where they take it. However, with only 44 pages more to go, I'm skeptical the author will be able to really exploit it to its full potential. A new, diverse, gang is introduced that made me a bit wary at first, but they're mostly harmless and it looks like they won't be around for Issue #2.
- Art style: Not too shabby. Panels are colourful and there's quite a bit going on in the backgrounds. Max and Chloe look good. As an added bonus, the panels will sometimes reflect the story's "time conundrum." Saying more would spoil it at this point, but I appreciated the artist's clues.
- Pricefield: Subtext, don't expect anything more explicit than a few glances or gestures. Personally, I think "less is more" is the right approach at this stage. Hopefully, the last two issues will build upon that, but even if they don't, I think I'm fine with that.
All I could think about was Jeff and Annie from Community.I wouldn't particularly recommend getting a physical copy right now, unless you're a hardcore LiS fan and even then you'll have a hard time finding one (they issued a reprint that will arrive on stores in December). Digital is the way to go. I may consider it once the graphic novel is released and depending on how the author resolves the conflict.
